Kevin started his career in pipe bands at the tender age of 13 with a promise of travelling to France with The British Rail East of Scotland Pipe Band – St Margret’s Depot if he could learn to play the tenor drum. He was taught by his Dad and managed to travel with the band in the summer of 1966. Also appearing at his first Cowal Championships the same year.
Kevin Left Edinburgh in 1971 and travelled to Teacher training College where he attended from 1971-1974 armed with an old taped up chanter (which he still plays today) and an RSPBA Blue Book it was his ambition to learn the pipes.
In 1976 Kevin attended his first practice at the Houghton Grammar School with P/M Eddie James and had his first official lesson with a 12 year old Gary Dawson. A few years later Kevin was taken under the then P/M Joe (Jock) Robertson who continued to teach him until his retirement. His teaching was continued by P/M Cameron Noble, and latterly P/M MDD Robertson, son of Joe.
Kevin has been involved in The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association for over 30 years as a Director and he served for 8 years as the Chairman of the Association.
